Aparito are proud to officially announce the partnership with Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and RaAzi for an innovative project which will involve designing an integrated digital healthcare framework for low-income chronic disease patients in South Africa.

The project; Digital and Drone Solution (DADs) stems out of the Scaling Out for Impact (SOFI) initiative hosted by Liminal which aims to foster closer ties between UK and South Africa businesses. The SOFI programme brought together 38 entrepreneurs from the UK and South Africa to co-create innovations to serve low-income communities in South Africa’s townships and rural economies. After six months of intensive discussions, this project has emerged as one of only 15 collaborations to be successfully funded.

The project which is funded by Innovate UK through the Newton Fund will see Aparito and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital expand on their previous work (Precision Management (PM) of Epilepsy in South African Children) in using remote patient monitoring technology to improve treatment outcomes for paediatric epilepsy patients.

Aparito will work alongside RaAzi in launching the preliminary development of a digitised outpatient supply chain which will combine remote patient monitoring technology with drone delivery of medication to ensure that communities are provided with more readily accessible healthcare.

“We’re very excited to work alongside Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and RaAzi on this project, and to see the positive impact of the project on the communities that we’ll engage with”

Obuchinezia Anyanwu – Medical Writer and Project Lead Aparito comments:

“I’m delighted to see our successful collaboration with Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital expand. With the addition of RaAzi, I’m confident this innovative project will positively impact treatment and healthcare access for low-income chronic disease patients.”

Sandra Komarzynski – Data Scientist Aparito comments:

“RaAzi is excited to be developing the drone and digital system solution alongside Aparito in conjunction with Red Cross Children’s Memorial Hospital. We believe that this is the beginning of greater things to come as we work on making access to healthcare convenient for all”

Yolanda Dolly Nxumalo – CEO of RaAzi comments:

“Working with Aparito in developing mHealth applications for children with epilepsy at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital has taught us many things.  Amongst others, it is clear that despite sometimes being a little overwhelmed, our families value the ability to provide ongoing information in real-time about their affected children and value the 2-way communication that is enabled; such as regular medication reminders. We have, in turn, learnt more about the epilepsy and daily lives of our patients in far more detail than that captured at clinic visits which has provided important insights such as how frequent unreported sleep disturbance is . We are looking forward to taking some of what we have learnt into a practical real world setting to get an idea of how it may help care.“

Professor Karen Fieggen – Medical Geneticist and Jo Wilmshurst – Head of Paediatric Neurology, both from Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital comment:

“I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to expand the work done to date with Red Cross Children’s Hospital, the addition of RaZi and their innovative approach brings an additional level of opportunity to address health inequalities in South Africa. We are fully committed to this project, and eager to see the impact”.
